Dr. Oluwatoyin Adejonwo is the founding Director of the Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (3CSD), a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, and a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She holds a PhD in International Environmental Law from the School of Law, University of Dundee, United Kingdom.
She is the Co-Editor of the book titled ‘Climate Change Justice and Human Rights: An African Perspective’ published by Pretoria University Law Press (PULP). The book interrogates the human rights paradigm as an intervention to secure climate change justice for vulnerable populations; analyses regional protection against human rights consequences of climate change; and assesses emerging interventions based on domestic regulatory frameworks on climate change in selected states in Africa.
She has, at various times, consulted for international environmental organisations including the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Environment. Oluwatoyin serves on the Committee of Experts providing legal, advisory and technical support on climate change to the Department of Climate Change (DCC) of the Federal Ministry of Environment.
Oluwatoyin recently authored a report on sexual and gender-based violence in West Africa titled ‘Ending Sexual Violence in West Africa (Nigeria)’ and funded by African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) (2022). She jointly prepared and presented a Policy Brief to the Nigerian National Assembly on the need for an improved Environmental Impact Assessment legislation in Nigeria. The Policy Brief titled ‘Improving Nigeria’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment’ was made possible with grants from Heinrich Böll Stiftung Foundation.
Oluwatoyin has taught environmental law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at universities in Scotland and South Africa. She recently visited the Faculty of Law, University of Stellenbosch as a visiting scholar and a guest lecturer in the postgraduate course on sustainable development law, and the Center for Human Rights, Faculty of Law University of Pretoria as a guest lecturer for the Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa Programme.
